Changing Careers To Cosmetology?
So you’re thinking of changing careers to Cosmetology, well good for you, I’m glad you’re here and I sure hope that I provide you with valuable information for you to make an informed decision. Now, don’t get me wrong, we sure need cosmetologists, good ones too, but the fact is that it’s hard work.
I remember a day when I was still in high school, touring the vocational center and cosmetology was one of the choices that I could choose from. The trick was that only 3 students were accepted from each area High School in the county and of course at 18, you know everything and it seemed pretty cool to have a career in cosmetology where you get to “play with hair all day long”!
Well the field of cosmetology encompasses several occupations, including hairstylist, hairdresser, shampooer, barber, skin care specialist and nail technician and the basic educational aspect is relatively the same. The biggest difference is the hours that are required for each that is set forth by the Board of Cosmetology, for your state, because each state has different requirements. I will share with you that the “shampooer” are generally cosmetology students.
Now, the hours remain the same and the only difference between the way, I got my cosmetology licenses is how I went about the program. If you are not currently a student as I was then, then the only way to gain the instructional and practical experience your only choice is a private business.
These programs are either full time or part time educational programs and the biggest difference is how long it will take you to complete the course, with the full time option, you could finish in a year, but with the part time program, it will probably take you closer to two years!
Cost – Changing careers to Cosmetology
While changing careers to cosmetology might seem appealing, do your home work … and please do it well! The cost to obtain such in my personal research for this article is that amongst 55 different choices across the USA, the cost could be between $10,000 – $20,000 but could cost closer to $6,500 in some rural areas. This covers the cost of the textbooks (Salon Fundamentals: A Resource for Your Cosmetology Career), instructional training and the Kit you’ll need that has all your basic start up tools things like rollers, perm rods, combs, brushes etc.
Here’s what I soon found out after I got into my “career” and why I changed my job!
Well, there are long hours, standing on my feet, wearing “good clothes” that are easily ruined from all the hair that clings to it, the color that sticks to it that can’t be removed unless it’s white (then you’d use bleach, practically the only thing that removed color from clothes!) Grumpy clients or customers, children who are wiggly, whiney … Clients that wants a particular “style” and not happy when you can’t do it or worse, that they can’t do it then “You didn’t cut their hair the right way!” Or perhaps, the color is too dark, not enough highlights, way too many highlights, “You cut my hair way to short” “You didn’t cut it enough” Don’t forget when you accidently cut your fingers – because you’re in a hurry or a child is moving to much (an some do require stitches) … can you see my point? – Oh, yeah … the smell of perms all day or most days!
Everyone is concerned with pay, right … how much will I get paid? Well when I started my education, I didn’t know that I would be working on commission plus tips. Now, don’t get me wrong, the tips sure can be a good thing … very good thing, if you know what you’re doing. So, the commission I was working for was 50% which when you’re 18 years old that sure seems pretty good, but here’s the down fall, no client/customers … NO PAY of TIPS! Ouch!
So, here’s my light bulb moment …
“You mean to tell me I’m going to put in 100% of my education and experience but I’m only going to get paid 50% of what I produce … oh, and I’m not getting paid when I want time off or I’m sick”, ugh …
quickly that became not so fun especially since I knew that there is a SMARTER way to earn money.
I made a career change to Fire and Rescue … I know a big difference. I’m now getting paid for all the time I put in but then I have become a huge fan of this “Internet Thing!” I know people who are earning (honestly) more money a month, than I use to make in a year.
Does that sound appealing to you?
There is a better way; you just need to find yours. I am totally convinced that everyone needs a presence on the Internet. I knew of NOTHING when I started my journey … but what I’ve learned is priceless and I’m glad I started. Here’s what I want for you. Let’s chat, and see how I can help you.
I know you’re looking for a better way; you just need to find a mentor. I will be honest with you. I will not send you on a chase of things. You cannot get something for nothing otherwise you’ll get nothing for something!
